UNGA80: Citizen Perspectives on the State of Multilateralism

Unmuhbarru.ac.id, Barru – UNGA80: Citizen Perspectives on the State of Multilateralism – September 30th at 10:00 AM EDT.

The event “UNGA80: Citizen Perspectives on the State of Multilateralism” is designed to integrate the voices of civil society, particularly young people, innovators, and change-makers, into the high-level discussions of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA 80).

Taking place under the overarching UNGA theme, “Better Together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights,” this forum directly addresses the urgent need to renew global commitment to multilateralism—the cooperation among multiple countries. By soliciting citizen perspectives, the event aims to bring tangible, on-the-ground solutions and experiences into the global policy conversation, moving beyond abstract political discourse to focus on human impact.

The central challenge addressed by the event is the current crisis facing the multilateral system, which is straining under geopolitical fragmentation, declining trust in international institutions, and escalating global threats like climate change and ongoing conflicts.

The discussions are structured to spotlight actionable solutions aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), peace, and human rights. Topics range from climate action and food security to press freedom, gender equality, and the complexities of migration and displacement. By engaging a broader audience outside of traditional government delegates, the forum seeks to inject fresh impetus and a renewed sense of legitimacy into global governance.

Ultimately, the event serves as a critical bridge between global institutions and the people they are meant to serve. By providing a platform for activists and grassroots leaders, it underscores the idea that a truly effective and responsive United Nations—one that is “fit for purpose” for the 21st century—requires the sustained engagement and input of global citizens. The goal is to inform and energize the political momentum behind necessary institutional reforms, ensuring that the future of international cooperation is more inclusive, accountable, and centered on the needs of people and the planet.
